Pokémon extended binder art

Extended binder art is printed artwork that continues the illustration of one Pokémon card across all nine pockets of a binder page. Your own card goes in the centre pocket, and the eight printed cards around it carry its scene out to the edges of the page.

What it is

Most binder pages hold nine separate cards. Extended binder art turns one of them into the whole page. We take the illustration of a single card and continue it outwards: the sky above it, the ground below it, the scene to either side. That continuation is cut into eight cards. Slide them into the pockets around your own card and the page becomes one picture, with your card at its heart.

It exists because the best cards deserve more than a pocket in a row. Collectors already put their favourite pulls in the middle of a page; this gives that page something to say.

Before and after: a Chespin card alone in a 9-pocket binder page, then surrounded by eight extended-art cards
Chespin 87/86: the card alone, then the finished page (3D render of a printed set).

How it works

  1. Pick your cardEvery design is made for one specific card: the Pokémon, the set and the card number.
  2. Print the pageDownload the PDFs and print at 100% on A4 or US Letter. Or order the set already printed.
  3. Cut the eight cardsFollow the cut guides. Each card is the size of a binder pocket.
  4. Fill the pageYour card goes in the centre pocket, the eight printed cards around it.

What the finished page looks like

A finished page is a 3×3 grid in which the binder's own seams are the only breaks in the picture. The centre pocket holds the real card, foil and texture included, so the most valuable thing on the page is also the one your eye lands on.

  • The finished Ampharos 90/86 page: the card in the centre pocket, its art across the eight around it
  • The finished Fennekin 80 page: the card in the centre pocket, its art across the eight around it
  • The finished Meowth 106/94 page: the card in the centre pocket, its art across the eight around it
Finished pages: Ampharos 90/86, Fennekin 80, Meowth 106/94. Your card is the one in the middle.

Which binders it fits

Every design comes in two card sizes. Standard prints cards at 63 × 88 mm, exactly the size of a Pokémon card, and fits any pocket a card fits. Vault X prints them at 66 × 94 mm to fill Vault X's larger pockets. Bundles add a page for 3×3 binders that hold cards in 3"×4" toploaders, and some designs have a 12-pocket (4×3) version. Questions

What is extended binder art?

Extended binder art is printed artwork that continues the illustration of one Pokémon card across all nine pockets of a binder page. Your own card goes in the centre pocket, and the eight printed cards around it carry its scene out to the edges of the page.

Is the Pokémon card included?

No. You use your own card: it goes in the centre pocket, and the printed cards fill the eight pockets around it.

Which binders does it fit?

Any 3×3 (9-pocket) binder page. Every design comes in two sizes: Standard cards at 63 × 88 mm, the size of a Pokémon card, and Vault X cards at 66 × 94 mm, which fill the roomier Vault X pockets. More on binder sizes.

Do I need a special printer?

No. The files are PDFs for A4 and US Letter paper, so any home printer or print shop can print them. Print at 100% ("Actual size"), never "Fit to page", so the cards come out the exact size of the pockets.

How do I cut the cards?

Along the cut guides on the sheet, with scissors, a paper trimmer or a cutting machine. Each card is cut to the size of a pocket, and the gaps between cards are trimmed away.

How do I get the files?

Buy the design on Etsy and download the files straight after checkout, from your Etsy purchases. Nothing is shipped.

Can I buy it already printed?

Yes, for many designs. Printed sets are made to order in Sweden, printed on 260 g paper, cut to Vault X size (66 × 94 mm) and shipped within the EU through Tradera. See printed sets.

What is in a bundle?

Listings named Bundle carry three formats in one purchase: the 3×3 binder page, a page for 3"×4" toploader binders, and frame prints in 4×6, 5×7 and 8×10 inch.

How are the designs made?

Each design starts from one real card. We create it digitally, with the help of AI image tools, then finish and check it ourselves so the art lines up with the card in the centre pocket.

Is SmeargleStudio official Pokémon merchandise?

No. SmeargleStudio is an independent, fan-made studio in Sweden. It is not affiliated with, endorsed or sponsored by Nintendo, Creatures, Game Freak or The Pokémon Company.

Can I ask for a card you don't have yet?

Yes. Message us on Etsy or Instagram (@smeargle.studio) with the card's name and number.
